MEET THE PURISTS
the journalist Stephen Brook interviews our Winemaker Leonardo Bellaccini
In the latest issue, November 2007, of the U.K. wine magazine DECANTER, Stephen Brook meets the “purists”, that’s to say the producers who believe that Sangiovese should not be adulterated and who worship this difficult grape. For San Felice, too this is an article of faith. Here are some notes of the journalist after his interview with our Winemaker: “… yet for 25 years Leonardo Bellaccini has had a free hand to produce wines with real Tuscan tipicity. As well as basic Chianti Classico, he makes two Riservas: Il Grigio being pure Sangiovese and Poggio Rosso containing a little Colorino. The oldest vines in Poggio Rosso were planted back in 1971. It is a powerful wine, combining elegance with muscularity, and is typically very long lived. The 1997 drunk this year was far from its peak. …”Stephen Brook also selects our POGGIO ROSSO 2001 among his top Chianti Classico Riservas, awarding it with 5 stars. Here is his comment on this vintage:
“complex aromas of plums, sour cherries, liquorice. Spicy, concentrated, tannic, quite weighty but stylish and long. Now-2020”.
