REFLECTIONS IN THE VINEYARD. DEVELOPMENT AND PRESERVATION OF OUR VITICULTURAL HERITAGE

San Felice, December 12th 2008

On December 12, a conference will be held here at San Felice, entitled “Reflections in the Vineyard. Development and Preservation of Our Viticultural Heritage.”
Speakers at the conference will be:
Prof. Laura Mugnai of the Università di Firenze will address vine pathologies, Prof. Attilio Scienza of the Università di Milano will address vine physiology, and agronomists Marco Simonit and Pierpaolo Sirch will offer concrete details in their “Practical Observations on the Effects of Pruning.”
The objective of the conference is to provide appropriate means of handling cane diseases, many of which take their start from careless or incorrect pruning, which can facilitate the spread of infection.
This conference is the first step in Tuscany of a process that will have as its second step the formation of a pruning school that will provide correct instruction in handling the vine.
Pruning correctly executed can not only ensure the longevity of a vineyard, which will then not only produce longer but will give ever better-quality fruit, but can also reduce vineyard management costs. A final consideration is the recovery of a profession, that of the pruner, since pruning is the art of conversing with the vine without inflicting on it traumatic wounds that could open the way to cane diseases.
Invitations to the conference will be extended to winegrowers in the areas of Chianti Classico, Montalcino, Montepulciano, and  Bolgheri, as well as to winemakers and agronomists, and local industry groups and journalists.
