Wine Enthusiast names San Felice among the 5 finalists for
“2016 European Winery of the Year”, the only Italian winery among all categories.
The winner will be announced 1 November
Castelnuovo Berardenga, September 2016. With the 2016 harvest still in full swing, an announcement has just arrived of a very prestigious recognition for San Felice, owned by the Allianz Group: Wine Enthusiast, one of the most authoritative publications in the international wine world, has named San Felice as one of the 5 finalists for their much-coveted award Best European Winery of 2016, in the final round of the Wine Star Awards 2016.
This accolade is still more important considering that San Felice is the only Italian winery nominated among all the wine categories, further evidence of high respect by Wine Enthusiast’s international panel for the producer’s contribution to research and innovation that it has continuously made in the field of oenology.
Since the1970s, the Allianz Group has carried out a long and very respectful campaign of restoration of the ancient medieval hamlet of Pieve San Felice, which dates back as early as the Etruscan period. The Group put into place an innovative development model for the entire San Felice estate, whose goals were absolute excellence and sustainability, a programme that married together art, tradition, and innovation. The vineyards, which lie in the heart of the Chianti Classico zone in the area of Siena, are predominantly dedicated to Sangiovese and other native grape varieties, but they are at the same time the subject of uninterrupted research and experimentation. The San Felice Vitiarium project preserves the entire spectrum of Tuscan viticultural genetic material; with the collaboration of the universities of Florence and of Pisa, some 300 grape varieties in danger of extinction have been identified. Subsequently, special attention has focused on several of them, such as Pugnitello, which, in blends with Sangiovese, has yielded wines of extraordinary structure and finesse.
The 2016 candidacy of San Felice for European Winery of the Year comes on the heels of last year’s recognition as Best Wine of the year 2015 for “Il Grigio” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 2011, again awarded by the Wine Enthusiast.
The Wine Enthusiast Wine Star Award is universally considered one of the most prestigious awards in the entire world of wine. There are 14 individual categories, and each year awards go to individuals and wineries that stand out for their constant striving for excellence.
Wine Enthusiast will announce the winner in each category on 1 November, and the official presentation ceremony will be on 30 January 2017, during the Wine Enthusiast Gala Night, in Miami at the Nobu Eden Roc .
